Side hustles are a great way to bring additional income to the house. The best ones are the passive income ideas that you can set up and walk away from, knowing that money will always be rolling in. Being able to make money while you sleep is a great feeling, so it’s no wonder that creating a mobile app can be a great source of passive income to make money.
My husband is a gamer
Having been a gamer his entire life, he has a passion for playing and has owned several different gaming devices and consoles. His favorite games are usually found on the Xbox, allowing him to play with friends around the world.
He has always wanted to start his own video gaming company. In fact, he keeps a journal with his ideas for new games, and late 2018 he started toying with the idea of creating a mobile game.
Shortly thereafter, he started to create one.
He knew he wanted to make money from it and that it could become a great passive income.
It took a few tries to finally settle on what he wanted his first game to be. He knew he wanted it to have a wide range of players and not be too small-minded. He started and stopped several different game concepts about mid-way.
Of course, I personally found this to be rather annoying. Getting used to the idea of one mobile game only for him to cancel it and go in a completely different direction without warning. But, that’s marriage I guess. Ha!
Not being the gamer type, I learned to just pretend that I understood what he was talking about half the time. Asking questions only lead to more questions and I couldn’t retain anything he said. Especially since I’m learning about so many blog-related things and as a SAHM of 2, my mind is already pretty mushy.
He used free game developing software
The game idea he finally settled on is one took him a few months to develop on his own using the free software that he chose.
He only applied a few hours a day (if that) to it. I know that if he had actually spent a full 8 hours of dedicated time to it, he could have finished itmuch sooner.
He decided on the game title Block Blitz, and it’s a fun game where letter blocks fall from the sky, and you clear them away by making words. The better the words, the more points you get.
You can redeem points for bombs and clocks, giving you a chance to clear tiles or add time to the clock, since you only have 60 seconds to make as many points as possible!
He used the best free app builder to make this happen
The website he used is called Unreal Engine. It’s free to use, and you only pay them when your game succeeds!
After you make $3,000, you pay them 5% of the game profit’s gross revenue from there on out. Pretty great deal considering they give you most of the tools you need to make a great game!
Some FAMOUS games were made using the Unreal Engine
If you’re a gamer, you probably already know this, or at the very least- will recognize these titles. But some of the hottest games today were made using the Unreal Engine.
These include (but are not limited to):
- Assassin’s Creed
- Rocket League
So as you can see, it’s totally legit. There is a lot of learning curve that comes with this free game developing software. But that should be expected with anything.
The great news is that there are a ton of amazing Youtube videos and tutorials out there to help you create different aspects of the app/game.
Learn how to do something one way, and tweak it to fit what you want.
How to create a free mobile app for iPhone or Android
While I want to say that it’s easy to create a free app, it’s actually a lot of frustration, curse words and hair pulling. But once you have the idea and the vision in place, it gets much easier.
Breaking down the steps to achieve the finished result really helps to take it one thing at a time. By focusing on just one small aspect at a time, you can keep from feeling too overwhelmed.
This is also helpful because you can find a tutorial somewhere (the internet is full of them) to help you with that small aspect. Continue on from there, even if it means watching hundreds of videos in the process.
Believe it or not, the trickiest part is packaging it up and getting it in the Google Play store.
This took us about 2 whole days to figure out, with minimal sleep each night and staying focused all day. But it worked, because our game Block Blitz is now available in the Google Play Store free for Android users! Rated E for everyone.
Unfortunately, the more we tested it, the more we found wrong. Small things like ads not working properly or leaderboard achievements not displaying as they should. So we’ve had to continually tinker with it and republish updates to see if it was fixed. We aren’t aware of any other ways to test our updates. So this had been a real struggle.
How to earn money from developing mobile games
You might be asking yourself, how do you make money from a free mobile app?
While it’s true that our game doesn’t cost anything to download, we will still have ways to make money from it.
There are 3 ways to make money from a mobile app.
2.) In app-purchases
3.) Having the app cost money in the first place!
Our advertisements for the app are done through Google, just like the ads you see on this blog.
While it may not be a get-rich-quick scheme, we will be paid for ad viewing on our mobile game.
When mobile games are incredibly popular, they can have millions of downloads. Play the game for 1 hour, and you’ll see a dozen ads. These pay a few cents per 1,000 views and even more when people click on them.
This is how blogs, mobile apps, and websites get paid through ads.
Different rates happen daily and you can never predict the traffic flow, clicks or views. But it’s very passive income because once you set it up, it’s there and making money.
In app-purchases are another great way to make money from an app!
A lot of people will buy add-ons inside a game because they don’t have the time to earn the item that they are wanting. My husband once spent a few hundred dollars a month on a game he was addicted to playing.
There are people out there (probably yourself included) that has paid money to an app’s in-store feature for one reason or another.
At the moment we have chosen not to include an in-store purchase for this app, but we may have some in our future developments.
Yes, there will be more apps in the future. Not all of them will be games, in fact, I’m already in design mode for one for this blog!
So if you’re curious to see this game and all its glory. You can find it right here, and play it yourself.
